What a day we had at our West End Plymouth Carnival.
Thousands of visitors turned out during the course of the day on Saturday August 27 to join in or watch our biggest and best carnival so far.
Every year we try to add more entertainment and this year’s carnival was a riot of noise and colour with a Samba band, circus performers, stilt walkers, giant puppets, live music and selection of stalls and street food.
More than 120 people took part in the carnival parade which set off from Frankfort Gate, marching up New George Street and along Armada Way to Place de Brest and back down Cornwall Street.
A packed afternoon of entertainment followed on Frankfort Gate and inside Plymouth Market and at various locations along Cornwall Street and New George Street.
The idea behind the event, which is organised by the Plymouth City Centre Company, is to provide a day of FREE family entertainment to raise the profile of the area and support our businesses which are mostly small independents.
Steve Hughes, City Centre Company chief executive, said: “We were delighted with the number of visitors, many of whom were visiting the West End for the first time and were surprised at the quality and breadth of our brilliant business community down here. We hope they will now become regular customers.
“The area is really vibrant with established traders but a whole new mix of businesses and a growing reputation for international food. For anyone who hasn’t been lately, we would say come and take a look.”
